I heard the sound of street organs, whistling bells, strange animal sounds. Turning a corner I was that part of the docks were filled with carnival contraptions. Gaudily painted panels, turbaned tents, raised platforms with bizarrely clothed creatures of all races and sexes. Right in front of me I saw a large filled basin with a seesaw positioned above, on each end perched a sailor. By their unsteady looks they had been gallivanting and had a tipple or two too many. From the platform on extravagantly mustached and dressed MC was in the act of handing both a bamboo pole. He motioned for silence… Traveling fairs have been around for ages and were popular diversions for children, sailors and landlubbers alike. People love to watch as hapless wanderers are being taunted, dropped into the water, riding a donkey facing backwards.
