George III was an unusual monarch, mainly known for his interest in experimental philosophy and his collection of scientific books and instruments. His reputation of being somewhat eccentric, even slightly mad, was exacerbated by his researching routing at the Windsor Castle Royal Library. Having commissioned a special Library Stairs by the famous Chippendale, he tended to file his most beloved books at the upper reaches of the imposing book filled reading rooms. The stairs were mounted on wheels. He enjoyed instructing two liveried footmen where to direct him next. Holding onto the elegantly carved railing, George III liked to hold forth on his conviction that one could think better when up in the air. This to all and everybody wanting to listen. Hand carved fine-grained, solid mahogany; our miniature model George III staircase is a tribute to a King who studied Newton and to Chippendale, furniture designer of renown whose name survived the ages.
