Tree Stormers, my Dad called them. Diminutive and colorful, dive-bombing, performing loop-de-loops between the branches of our Christmas tree. Every year Dad added one, whittling away at a few pieces of wood, using yarn for guy wires, and narrating airplane lore with names like Jennies, Spads, Bristols, Fokkers, Sopwith Pups and Camels.First World War era planes, the Red Baron's epoch. Dad never forgot to tell the story of the German soldier who, on Christmas Eve, walked into the battlefield between the trenches. The guns became silent as his far-reaching tenor sang 'Silent Night'.
