Introduced in the early 18th century, the ship's wheel replaced the steering tiller. The wheelstand was customarily positioned above the rudder on the poop deck, out in the open air. During the Steam Era, the wheel moved to the wheelhouse on the 'bridge'. Handmade of non-endangered hardwood, with a solid brass nave.
